| Volunteers have an important place in the Bay Point system. Many of the students do not have at support system to help guide them. Volunteers fulfill the caring mentor role that is far too often missing in the lives of the students. In appreciation of the valuable contributions made by our volunteers. Bay Point Schools bestows a special award to a volunteer as the Volunteer of the Year. This year our Volunteer of the Year award goes to Dr. Gerston Diaz. Dr. Diaz is a chiropractor who each week adjusts any student requesting this treatment. In addition, he established and coached the Bay Point Soccer team in its first year, 1999-2000. All of this he accomplished on his down time, totally on a pro bono basis.
Volunteer Opportunities Speaker - It is inspirational for our students to hear from successful men and women that to be successful in the world, they must be prepared to overcome the obstacles and frustrations that one meets inevitably along the way. Tutor - Due to poor attendance and lack of self-discipline, many of our students are scoring far below grade level when they arrive at Bay Point. By volunteering to help tutor a student in reading, math, vocabulary, etc. the volunteer not only assists the teachers by helping the student to catch up but he/she demonstrates that caring people are willing to help. Mentor - Those students who are basically alone in the world have no one who is there for them. These boys never receive a visit from a parent. When they earn the right for a home pass, they have no home to visit. A mentor can help to fill this void by offering to call or visit a student weekly or by taking a child out to lunch or dinner and a movie or an athletic event. Business Partnership - Many of our students will not be attending college after Bay Point. The school needs to know what opportunities for career jobs there are. The vocational department can develop training programs in partnership with the commercial community. Our boys learn to be conscientious employees. We seek internships, on the job training or employment opportunities. |
