Bay Point Schools Vocational program overview

Bay Point emphasizes the need for its students to develop skills in preparation for their future occupations. Those students, sixteen years of age and older, begin by attending an Introduction to Vocations Orientation. It covers an overview of the different vocational courses offered at Bay Point Schools. Culinary Arts, Landscaping,  Horticulture, and other construction trades are just a few of the courses offered at BPS. After the orientation the student may choose the course that interests him the most. In some cases he will need a few days to confer with his counselor and discuss his selection possibilities before making a decision.

The youths participating in these programs, also participate in many community outreach projects. These include but are not limited to, building houses for Habitat for Humanity, assisting with wooden projects for Island Dolphin Care, and working to maintain and improve the facilities on campus. Through a partnership with National Home Builders Association, students interested in the construction trades are enrolled in the Home Builders Institute (HBI). This is a 900 hour pre-apprenticeship certificate course that provides job ready skills for entry level positions in the different trades and job placement anywhere in the country.

The Culinary Arts students, who earn their GED, continue on with a full scholarship to Johnson & Wales University where they can earn an AA or a BS Degree in the Culinary Arts field. Others are working in Bakery Shops, Restaurants or in one of the school kitchens.
