Along with an exceptionally strong academic program, the co-curricular program at Bay Point adds experience and a valuable dimension to the student’s education outside the classroom. Co-curricular and community programming are vital components of Bay Point’s innovative behavioral modification approach model.

Competitive Debate
This highly competitive and motivating program teaches the boys to listen, think logically and construct arguments into language instead of reverting to physical means of winning an argument. The Bay Point Debate Team routinely go to the University of Miami to defend the Sweepstakes Award which is given to the high school team with the highest win percentage.

Street Law Classes
The Center for Ethics and Public Service at the University of Miami School of Law appoints an instructor to conduct full semester curriculum for students aspiring to attend law school. The program is called Street Law.

Each student enrolled in this dynamic and innovative class will not only know their rights as a member of society, but are taught to also approach situations that will not put them in harm’s way. The final class project is a mock trial designed to empower each student through public speaking and creativity. Each student is required to make individual arguments for their clients and have the opportunity to act as either a witness or a judge. While some students presented opening arguments, others acted as witnesses and judges. The success of the annual Bay Point mock trails attributes to a high level of enjoyment and passion seen in each young man.

Music Therapy
Bay Point’s Music Therapy program continues to inspire our students. This year’s program is conducted by University of Miami graduate student Jade Vanacore. She holds a series of one-hour sessions with the students, during which they discuss popular music. Last semester the classes culminated in a daylong session at a South Beach recording studio where the boys recorded two original songs with positive Hip Hop lyrics. The program now successfully continues each semester with a rotation of teachers and therapeutic music approaches.

Leadership Development Programs

The Boy Scouts Troop teaches leadership and setting higher standards for living. Our Troop 995 receives countless honors including recent recognition from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for their work at the John Pennekamp Park. The Big Brother Program fills our boys with pride and self-confidence as they mentor at-risk elementary children. Community Service hours, performed by every student, instills a sense of giving back.

The Teen News Bureau, funded by the Children’s Trust, teaches Bay Point students writing and journalism. An important component of this program is helping students understand victims’ pain as they interview or write about crime victims. Objective writing is also emphasized as they learn to look at both sides of an issue before writing an article.

Many articles are sent and published in the Miami Herald and local community papers. Visit our News section to read articles written or published by our students.
