Ms. Michelle Kaiser, Director of Education: At Bay Point, education is SACRED! It is the programs major emphasis. When entering a Bay Point Classroom, you will see a bright, disciplined and positive atmosphere. It is an exciting environment because our teachers have the opportunity to motivate and teach the youths without interruptions. Bay Point is a Dade County Alternative Outreach school. Every student admitted to Bay Point is registered with the Dade County Public School System. Each youth is placed at his functional level without regard to their age and according to his scores on the MBA (Mini Battery of Assessment) Test. There are four academic areas. The student moves through these areas at his own pace based on quarterly testing. The curriculum has its four main classes of English, Math, Science and Social Studies. Other classes offered are Reading, Life Skills Management (this includes Health Education) and Computer Technology. In addition to regular classes at every grade level, the Learning Center offers remedial classes for those functioning at a third grade or lower level. There is a GED preparation program for the students to return to school and the school reaches out to the needs of special students. There are college correspondence courses, at Miami Dade Community College for those students who have already earned their GED. Each month our students compete in academic, artistic or athletic competitions and we are proud of the many who win blue ribbons, certificates, awards, scholarships, etc. Every month a Bay Point student wins a prize in an art contest, a writing contest, at the Science Fair and each year we have many students who win scholarships at the Inner City Youth Council. Mrs. Sonja Hennigan, Registrar: Mr. Wes McInnis, Testing Coordinator Students are tested within the first five days of arrival and placed in appropriate academic settings. Upon program completion students are also tested for placement after leaving Bay Point. Basic computer skills, competency with Windows 98 and the Microsoft Office suite of programs, keyboarding, and self paced tutorials provide an outstanding computer competency program for students. An introduction to computer construction, upgrading, service and repair is also available. Our labs are constantly upgraded providing the latest in technological equipment for the students. Our school Alma Mater is available in text or audio format. You can listen to the audio file by selecting "open this file from its current location", or download it to your computer for listening at your leisure. Your computer must have an associated program capable of playing mp-3 format audio files. A freeware program is available for this purpose here. ESE Exceptional Student Education: Learning Center Mission Statement: The Mission of Bay Points Learning Center is an overall re-education of the student: to improve social behavior in group and educational settings, to improve basic educational skills, to learn necessary learning strategies, to improve academic functional levels, to appreciate the intrinsic and extrinsic values of education, and to eventually progress students to an educational level where they can be main-streamed into non-ESE classrooms, and or vocational training programs. Many famous people have had learning disabilities and emotional handicaps. Stephen King, who has tremendous difficulty with spelling, is assisted by spell check on the computer and by his editor. By using these accommodations he is able to write best-selling novels. Even Albert Einstein was described by his teacher, as being mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in his foolish dreams. Therefore, ESE students should not be considered as necessarily having below average intelligence, but that they learn and process information differently. ESE Projects
